Terraced Veggie & Fruit Garden

Location: Leigh on Sea

Project duration:

Project style: Veggie and fruit garden

Key features: Terraced garden, bbq pit in the hill, polytunnel, automated irrigation

In the Autumn of 2023 we took on a challenging garden project that sat on a steep gradient of land just off the coast. The veggies have a million-dollar view of the estuary from this spot!

We installed terraced beds on two sides of the garden (with woodchip-lined steps alongside for easy access) and added a sunken fire pit surrounded by tree stump seats, which is protected from the wind and draws the whole family down to the bottom of the garden to enjoy while looking out at the great view! Despite this land being on an incline, we managed to lay over 150m of irrigation pipe (with 3 taps), utilising the gradient so that there was even pressure and water distribution across all beds.

We created enough growing space in this garden to create the same yield as a small farm by adding a polytunnel and moving the remaining beds from the top of the garden to the bottom. As a result, the garden owner often has so much surplus veg that she is able to donate regularly to the local food pantry, helping to nourish her community!
