Sam had recently bought a new house and one of his main goals was to transform the garden into a space where he could both grow his own food, as well as encourage wildlife, in the form of frogs, newts, dragonflies and birds (as a keen birdwatcher, this was a priority for him!).
The garden area is split into three sections - a backdoor patio area, a main garden with a lawn and a concrete back access area with sheds and bins. Our focus was the patio and main garden.
The patio and bannister needed bringing back to former glory, so we jet washed both so that we had a clean blank slate. Two beds were built either side of the patio, with stairs going down into the garden for herbs, veggies and flowers. We installed a jasmine arch over the steps which will provide a beautiful sensory experience as people walked into the garden.
The final part of the patio design were two half whiskey barrels that were planted with two cherry blossom trees and an understory of herbs for easy kitchen access and spring beauty.
We then moved onto the garden, where we installed four bespoke vegetable beds with a birdbath centerpiece. This gave the client an abundance of bed space to become self-sufficient.
Two fruit trees were also added with an understory of bulbs to eventually block out the view of the sheds and bins.
We also installed log stump steps buried to ground level to act as steps through the garden, with red creeping thyme to crawl over the steps and bring in butterflies.
My favourite part of the garden is the shallow water garden feature that we added to frame the steps. These were filled with stones, aquatic plants, ferns, grasses and ivy and driftwood to become a haven for wildlife. A great quick turnaround with great results!
