The South Norwood Community Kitchen (SNCK) is the first project that I got to utilise my growing knowlege and expertise to help support a community! This job was funded by grant money acquired by the initiative. This gave us the flexibility to give the community kitchen exactly what they wanted.

Design-wise, the main aim was to integrate a large growing space that didn’t impose too much on the garden, as most of that space was needed for recreational purposes for multiple occupants. We achieved this by working on the margins of garden; installing a large raised sleeper bed along the back wall for growing vegetables, strategically placed for optimal sunshine, as well as a vertical space to grow tomatoes and cucumbers. The bulk of the food was grown here for the kitchen.

I focused on creating a functional growing space that also encouraged biodiversity, to support and attract wildlife for the community to watch and enjoy.

Between the wildlife area and the ‘bug hotel’ I added a natural planting plan using logs, compost, woodchip and multiple plants to support wildlife, scattered with edible plants to create an ‘edimental garden’ (edible and ornamental). On the shady part of the space we installed a water butt to collect water from the guttering, a small storage unit for tools and equipment and a wash/pack-table so that the team can process the vegetables and fruits before they go into the kitchen.

The underside of the table had shiitake logs in a design that enabled them to benefit from the passive moisture running off the surface, keeping them moist so that they will provide produce later in the season. We also incorporated two whiskey barrels with trees and herbs, including climbing Jasmine, planted with the intention to create a beautiful aroma around the seating area. As well as this, we planted herbs in some of the original decking, to elevate the area.

The end result also had a communal seating area, where people could sit and enjoy the garden and eat their lunch. This resulted in a cleaner and safer environment, now the space is functional, practical and aesthetic.
