Location: Edenbridge, Kent

Project duration: 1 week (+ ongoing maintenance)

Project style: Allotments, orchard and wildlife pond

Key features: Large wildlife pond to attract beneficial wildlife, companion planting, orchard, using mushroom compost for bountiful harvest, rainwater harvesting, natural buildings, herb spiral

Q Homes have built the most sustainable and forward-thinking housing in the entire UK, with their standards rated highly for what is deemed ‘eco’. The whole project is carbon negative, with sustainability considered at every stage.

My involvement in the project was liaising with ‘Roots Allotments’ to project manage, design and conceptualise bespoke, high-end allotment spaces to go alongside their sustainable new-build properties, enabling their residents to grow their own food and spend time amongst nature.

The allotment design includes 10 individual 10m x 10m vegetable beds, along with bespoke potting sheds with water catchments and irrigation from whiskey barrels, an orchard with wildflowers, soft-fruit areas wildlife pond, herb spiral and a maintenance shed.

The main feature of the space is a 3m x 2m wildlife pond, surrounded by a bank of beautiful, high-nectar plants to attract pollinators, grasses for texture and woodland plants, such as ferns, for a native feel.

There is also an overflow spillway, leading to a soakaway under the herb spiral, made from bricks that match the housing development.

This project is an on-going work in progress.
